Being good neigh-bours

horseGENEROUS Chelmsford folk never say no to a good cause, especially not one dear to the heart of horse-mad colleague Nicola Gardner. So whenever she asks for donations for her favourite charity, the Essex Horse and Pony Protection Society, she is thrilled with the response. “We fund-raise for a lot of different charities here at Chelmsford so to get great support for a smaller niche charity is really fantastic,” says Operations Expert Nicola, who spends her spare time volunteering as a fostering officer at the nearby Sanctuary, where she helps rehome horses. “We see some very sad cases, but money raised by my colleagues here at Easter helped pay for the veterinary care for an orphaned foal, who is now making great progress.” The appeal for Oreo the foal raised more than £60 and Nicola has also collected £1,100 by holding tack sales. When not busy with her charity horse work, Nicola cares for and shows her own two horses, pint-sized miniature Shetland ponies, one of which she has bred. “All my colleagues and friends know I’m mad about horses and have been since I was little, so this is a cause which is very close to my heart.”
