Martin makes a splash

CYCLING and running to stay fit are a way of life for Martin Yates, but completing a tough open water swim as part of his first testing triathlon was his biggest test yet.

“Swimming six miles, in a wetsuit, in salt water, is very different to doing a few lengths in the pool, but I’m pleased I managed it,” says Bootle’s Postal Payments Process Expert, who spent three months training to get fit for the race in Southport.

Martin raised more than £250 for a local Leonard Cheshire home, which cares for his brother-in-law Philip, who has Motor Neurone disease. “I wanted to raise as much as I could, as well as challenge myself and was really pleased to finish in just under three hours,” he says.

“Now I know I can cope with the swim I’m thinking about tackling a half Iron Man race later this year.
